Radio Drum

Working with the Victoria Conservatory of Music, CanAssist
has developed a unique musical instrument called the Radio Drum. This device
has two elements: drum sticks with small transmitters embedded in their tips,
and a rectangular surface containing a detector that determines the relative
position of each drum stick. A person can generate and change a sound by moving
the sticks in a particular direction and at various speeds or by hitting the
surface. The sounds generated can be customized to the individual
user. A wide range of users can play this device – from those with very limited
movement to those with excellent dexterity. Some users have created very sophisticated music with this system.
(This technology was delivered in 2005.)
