Sam is a Mechanical Design Technician Co-op at CanAssist and a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Victoria, pursuing a biomedical sub-specialization. He is passionate about designing technologies that make a real, positive impact in people’s lives and is motivated by finding fulfillment in work that helps others in meaningful ways.
Previously, Sam worked as a Mechanical Engineering Design Intern at CDR Systems in Calgary, Alberta, where he led projects developing accessible and affordable patient positioning equipment for cancer radiation therapy. His designs emphasized patient comfort and usability while lowering costs, making advanced technologies more attainable for centres and patients with limited resources. This experience solidified his interest in user-focused design and healthcare technologies.
At UVic, Sam has built strong skills in CAD, prototyping, and ground-up product design, with a focus on balancing performance and cost. He values teamwork above all, thriving in collaborative environments where diverse skills and perspectives drive the best solutions.
Outside of engineering, Sam is a black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do, enjoys hiking with his dog, and loves spending time with friends and family.
Sam would like to acknowledge and thank the lək̓ʷəŋən Peoples, including the Songhees, Esquimalt, and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations, on whose unceded lands he is grateful to live, learn, and work. Having grown up in Victoria, he feels fortunate for the beauty and opportunities these lands have given him, and he recognizes the ongoing stewardship and enduring relationship Indigenous peoples have with this place.
