Melissa's story

Job Coach Brooke (left) and Melissa. After working with her TeenWork job coach on creating a resume and honing interview skills, Melissa obtained a work experience position at Petals Plus. There, she was responsible for washing dishes, taking out recycling and folding ribbons. The confidence and skills the teen gained over two months motivated her to seek a paid position.

Melissa was excited to begin working as a facilities associate at Old Navy. With support from TeenWork, Melissa continues to improve her problem-solving skills, attention to detail and ability to focus. With each new shift, Melissa's confidence, independence, and efficiency increase. In addition, after continued practice with TeenWork Job Coach Brooke Parlby, Melissa is now able to independently use public transportation to get to and from work.

Melissa is enjoying working at Old Navy and is delighted to continue there as she starts college. She especially appreciates how friendly and helpful her supervisor and co-workers have been. Plus, there are other bonuses that make Melissa smile.

“One of my favourite things about working at Old Navy is the employee discount!” Melissa says.

Looking to the future, Melissa is excited about pursuing her passion for cooking by taking classes at Camosun College.
